📋 Run That Back: Hip Hop Heroes Highlight Top Spirit Stories Of 2024

This year’s spirits news was full of big names and bold moves: warring tequilas, sudden closures, celebrities popping in and out of the industry, and even an intern blowing things up. You read ‘em, we ranked ‘em. Here’s a preview of this year’s top 10 spirit stories:

#9 🔨 Smashing Success

If we skip right to the end of this fun marketing success story, non-alc cocktail Mixoloshe gets a new name, SMASHD, that pays homage to its viral social media campaign that amassed over 120 million views and gained the brand a half million followers on Instagram. But that skips over the best part – an intern gleefully taking a baseball bat to one of the company’s cocktails. To say the least, this one was a hit.

#7 🥊 Industry Vets Ready for ‘Round 2’

Being a billionaire certainly helps, but businessman John Paul DeJoria is bringing more than just that to his new Texas-based company Round 2 Spirits; as the co-founder of Patrón Tequila and Paul Mitchell hair products, he’s got a track record that beckons well for his new venture – even more so when considering he’s teaming with an experienced team of former leaders from Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits. As reflected by the launch story’s popularity, BevNET readers apparently agree.

#4 🇫🇮 Jay-Z’s Marcy Venture Partners Backs The Finnish Long Drink

This has been kind of a big year for hip-hop legends entering the spirits game (see below), but Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) didn’t make it about him when investing in fast-rising RTD brand The Finnish Long Drink back in May via Marcy Venture Partners, the firm he co-founded alongside RocNation CEO Jay Brown and investor Larry Marcus. He may be in the conversation as rap’s G.O.A.T., but the multi-Grammy Award winner isn’t expected to be splashed across promos for the brand, which also counts “Top Gun: Maverick” actor Miles Teller, DJ Kygo and professional golfer Rickie Fowler as backers.

#2 🎤 Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre Launch Gin & Juice RTD

Some 30 years after first topping the charts, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre returned with a much-awaited new album this month, but the West Coast rap legends had already put together a prolific year long before then. The duo made noise in February by announcing their first joint foray into beverage with a ready-to-drink collaboration inspired by Snoop’s iconic Dre-produced single “Gin & Juice.” The drink was the first release from Dre & Snoop, a new premium spirits company led by founders of On The Rocks cocktails. Drawing more inspiration from the artists’ musical collaborations, the brand has since followed with Still G.I.N. on the promise of a coming U.S. ‘gin-aissance.’

📦 Proxies Moves Into Box(ies)

Just in time for the driest (drinking) month of the year, non-alcoholic brand Proxies has launched its first wine alternative in a large format.

🍷 The limited edition, three-liter box of Proxies Everyday White variety debuted this weekend and retails on the brand’s website for $60. The variety claims to offer a tropical flavor profile with verjus and green tea provided for acidity and body.

🍇 Although there are a few entrants abroad, Proxies claims it is the first to release a premium, NA boxed wine variety in the U.S.

📊 Convenience-oriented iterations could help grow the demographic of abstaining drinkers. According to survey data from the recent Consumer Trends report, about 31% of Gen Z and millennials plan to participate in Dry January.

✨ Gen Z To Hit The Streets For NYE

Nearly two-thirds (63%) of consumers plan to celebrate New Year’s Eve – and many of them say they are planning to buy booze, according to market research firm Numerator.

🏠 Gathering at-home with friends and family is the most popular planned celebration (61%), followed by cooking or baking at-home (39%), hosting others at-home (24%), ordering food via takeout or delivery (19%) and dining out (17%).

🥂 Despite their typical home-body tendencies, younger legal-drinking-age (LDA) consumers are more likely to go out for drinks to mark the end of the year, with 19% of Gen Z and millennials planning to visit the on-premise, compared to 13% of all consumers.

🍺 Food (79%) tops the list of planned purchases for revelers, followed by alcoholic beverages (58%), non-alcoholic beverages (33%), party supplies (28%) and decorations (25%). Beer is the most popular bev-alc purchase among those planning to imbibe, with 59% of consumers intending to buy for their parties, followed closely by champagne (56%) and spirits (55%).

🛍️ Where will folks be shopping? Nearly three-quarters (72%) of respondents plan to hit up brick-and-mortar retailers for their New Year’s Eve needs, with grocery stores (56%) as the most popular destination, followed by big box stores (45%), liquor stores (39%) and dollar stores (21%). Fewer than one-fifth (17%) of respondents plan to shop online.

🤝 FDA Commits to Food Label Compliance Date

Uniform compliance for all final food label regulations (introduced after Jan. 1, 2025, and on or before Dec. 31, 2026) must be implemented by Jan. 1, 2028, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proclaimed this morning.

📅 Despite the deadline, the FDA urges manufacturers to update packaging as soon as it is feasible for their business. The new timeline does not impact compliance dates for any rules published before Jan. 1, 2025

📝 From the release: “Use of a uniform compliance date allows industry to adjust to new labeling requirements in an orderly and economical manner by allowing sufficient lead time to plan for the use of existing label inventories and the development of new labeling materials.”
