💭 Today’s Big Take

🥚 A Hard-Boiled Look At Elevated Egg Prices

🥚 A Hard-Boiled Look At Elevated Egg Prices

Grocery prices are high, but one household staple has become the focal point for inflation: eggs. Average prices for a large dozen hit their high water mark in January 2023, reaching $4.82, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In December 2024, the average price was $4.16.

Adding to the madness: Prices are up and demand has not subsided, causing many shoppers to stumble upon barren refrigerated egg sets in grocery stores.

  • A Numerator survey this week found that about 71% of U.S. egg shoppers believe the current price of eggs in their area is “somewhat or very expensive” and over half (55%) of egg buyers said they’ve noticed shortages or out-of-stocks at local retailers in the past month.

What’s scrambling the supply chain? The devastating resurgence of avian flu is one part of the equation, with about 13 million laying hens culled since the beginning of the year. The second largest egg producer, Rose Acre Farms, reported an outbreak this week at its Seymour, Ind., facility. But the issue of high prices goes deeper.

Egg producers have raised prices on the back of the elevated demand. Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg producer in the country, reported a strong Q2 2025 this month, “reflected by higher market prices” on the back of “robust demand,” said president and CEO Sherman Miller in press release statements.

Specialty and conventional suppliers are pulling levers to increase production including consolidating supply chains and making strategic infrastructure investments.

Vital Farms has added 125 family farms to its network since the end of 2023 and invested in more production equipment to ramp up capacity. Fellow specialty egg supplier Pete & Gerry’s has also followed suit, this week adding Pasture Brands Holdings, the parent company of Iowa-based egg producer Farmer Hen House, to its portfolio.

That’s not to say these moves have stemmed the bleeding in stores. In fact, as conventional egg suppliers are hit harder by bird flu, consumers are being forced to consider trading up.

When faced with an out-of-stock of conventional eggs, 26% of shoppers are opting for higher-priced premium varieties, according to Numerator’s survey data. The rest are choosing to check another nearby store (24%) or skip the purchase altogether and check back another time (40%).

Some reports warn there might be no end in sight, meaning consumers might be investing even more to make their Sunday morning frittata.

🐟 Tinned Fish Brand BELA Unveils New Look

🐟 Tinned Fish Brand BELA Unveils New Look

After 28 years on grocery store shelves, sustainable seafood brand BELA this week unveiled its first-ever brand refresh and revamped website, enabling consumers to order directly from the company, ahead of a product line expansion in the coming months.

📦 These moves signal the beginning of “Tinned Fish 3.0,” according to founder and CEO Joshua Scherz, which he sees as a continuation of the post-pandemic recasting of the pantry staple as a premium product, led by new entrants like Fishwife and Scout.

💬 “... in recent years, our focus has been on managing significant growth and navigating increasingly complex logistics, which meant we largely sat out the rise of Tinned Fish 2.0,” Scherz said.

❌ Haven’s Kitchen Ceases Operations

Haven’s Kitchen founder Alison Cayne announced today in a LinkedIn post that the six-year-old CPG brand has officially ceased operations.

🚚 The brand produced refrigerated sauces and aiolis that were sold in Whole Foods and Target on the East and West coasts as well as at a variety of regional and independent stores. Just last month it launched its shelf-stable Aioli line with Thrive Market.

🗣️ “They say entrepreneurship is staying alive long enough for something lucky to happen. And even though this didn’t go exactly the way we all hoped it would, a lot of lucky DID happen: We made great products that brought healthier flavor into home kitchens across the country, we learned a lot together, I met so many of you,” Cayne said in the post.

🔻 Real Good Foods Deregistering with the SEC

The Real Good Food Company is voluntarily delisting its common stock from the Nasdaq and deregistering with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to a press release this week.

⛔ The frozen and refrigerated foods company said its decision was based on various factors, including a notice from Nasdaq in September that it was suspending its trading in the company’s stock and would eventually delist the company.

  • The company also cited the "significant financial and administrative requirements that come with being a public company.”

🍕 Launched in 2016, Real Good Foods started as a low-carb, high-protein frozen pizza brand. Over the years it expanded into other snacks and meals and opened a second production facility in 2022.

🍷 [yellow tail] and Domino’s Launch Red Blend

Just as our taste buds are finally recovering from the infamous Pizza Hut wine (seriously, what was in that stuff?) we’ve received word that [yellow tail] is taking inspiration from the pizza-innovation playbook.

🦘 The Australian wine company partnered with Domino’s to create a limited-edition Red Blend

👀 Fortunately, the new collaboration appears to be a regular, fruit-forward wine meant to pair with pizza rather than taste like it.

🍕 The Red Blend features a “Twist.Tap.Order” cap that, when twisted off and tapped to a smartphone, allows consumers to place an order through the Domino’s app.

⭐ One Super Bowl of Gronkamole, Please

🥑 It's nearing that time of year where marketers show off their biggest moves. We didn’t expect them to take “big” so literally, but this year Avocados From Mexico did just that – releasing the Big Game Guac Pack, a Y2K-inspired fanny pack that holds all of the avocado dip-making and eating essentials.

🏈 That’s not even the biggest part of this campaign. As it drums up excitement for the “Always Good accessory you didn't know you needed,” the produce company teamed up with former NFL star Rob Gronkowski for a live competition where viewers guessed how many avocados he could eat via his…wait for it…..favorite Gronkamole dip.

🔢 And just in case you weren’t aware. Avocados From Mexico is responsible for 95% of the avocados sold in the U.S. leading up to the Big Game…. or enough to equal the height of 20 million Rob Gronkowskis.
