🥥 Vita Coco: Core Strength Means More Innovation, M&A?

🥥 Vita Coco: Core Strength Means More Innovation, M&A?

We may be heading into the winter season, but it's sunny skies above Vita Coco as the coconut water maker continued to grow in Q2, fueled by a fortuitous combination of pricing and volume increases alongside reduced transportation and supply chain costs.

📈 The brand's core coconut waters continued to drive performance during Q3, posting +23% YoY sales growth and +19% volume. The segment is up 20% in net sales and +17% volume for the year-to-date.

🤑 Those numbers helped push Vita Coco's overall net sales to +21% ($140 million) for the quarter and +18% ($249 million) for the year-to-date.

💰 Gross profit was $51 million or 37% of net sales (compared to $29 million or 25% of net sales in the prior-year period), a sequential improvement of more than 500 basis points from Q1 2023 which the company credited to lower transportation costs, net sales growth and higher pricing.

✍️ The results have pushed the company to raise its full-year net sales (now approximately +10-12% compared to fiscal year 2022), gross margin and Adjusted EBITDA guidance for the fiscal year 2023.

"We have delivered our best quarter ever as our focus on expanding consumption of our brands through increased usage occasions is delivering strong volume performance for our flagship Vita Coco Coconut Water brand, particularly in the Americas," said Vita Coco co-founder and executive chairman Mike Kirban.

But despite its continued dominance in coconut water, Vita Coco has made no secret of its ambition to evolve into a broader better-for-you beverage platform, though various moves in that direction -- natural energy play Runa, a Spiked RTD and protein water PWR LIFT being examples -- have been slow to find traction thus far. But with distribution and velocities helping coconut water grow across all reported channels, there's fuel to spare.

Kirban alluded to cost savings from higher pricing and lower transportation costs having opened the door for the company to "increase investments designed to drive long term growth of our brands," emphasizing that Vita Coco "remains committed to our long-term goals and ambitions" in the "better-for-you functional hydration" space, which is sizes up as a +$30 billion market.

For that, maintaining liquidity and cash flow – currently at $95 million and no debt, per company documents – is key, as provided by the company's asset light model. With a strong balance sheet upon which to build, Vita Coco appears to have the rare luxury of time and patience to construct its long-term vision.

⚡Panera Updates Messaging on Highly Caffeinated Lemonade

Last week we noted a lawsuit in which fast-casual chain Panera Bread was being sued by the family of Sarah Katz, a college student in Philadelphia who died after drinking a hyper-caffeinated "Charged Lemonade," but that civil action has already sparked change.

All restaurant locations now feature messaging around Charged Lemonade that indicates the drink contains caffeine, should be consumed in moderation and is not recommended for children, people sensitive to caffeine, pregnant or nursing women.

A large, 30 oz. Charged Lemonade contains up to 390mg of caffeine from guarana and green coffee extract; according to the Food & Drug Administration, the maximum safe daily dosage of caffeine for adults is 400mg.

“I’m happy that we are moving in a direction of making a change, but I consider these baby steps," an attorney representing Katz's family told NBC News.

🧐 Report Calls Out PET Plastic As Not “100% Recyclable”

A research report based out of the European Union is warning consumers that PET plastic recycling claims are misleading. The report released by by ClientEarth, ECOS (Environmental Coalition on Standards), Eunomia Research & Consulting and Zero Waste Europe drew from previous research from circular economy and recycling specialists to call out the greenwashing of PET plastic and the use of the word “recyclable” on beverage brands’ bottle packaging.

♻️ The report asserts that the claims of “100% recyclable” often do not account for caps and labels that are rarely made from recycled content and using imagery or language that implies circularity or sustainability could be considered greenwashing. Even in the “best recycling systems in Europe,” PET should not be considered a circular material, the report stated.

🤨 “This report clearly demonstrates that ‘plastic bottle circularity’ is a myth. Claims on bottles that promote this idea risk misleading consumers and presenting an obstacle to the green transition,” ClientEarth representative Rosa Pritchard said in a statement.
