📰 Big In Beverage Today |
| | | As the FDA flips the food pyramid, dairy is enjoying a newfound view from the top. True to its promise of delivering the “most significant reset of federal nutrition policy in decades,” the government’s new dietary guidance released this week put dairy back in the spotlight. - The guidelines emphasize dairy products (along with protein and healthy fats) as one of the cornerstones of a healthy diet, replacing the previous focus on carbohydrates and grains.
That’s much-needed good news for milk producers in particular, a segment that’s been beleagured by bad press and declining consumption rates over the past decade, falling 2.3% CAGR in that time according to USDA data (even as cheese, butter and yogurt have grown). “The new Dietary Guidelines send a clear and powerful message to Americans: dairy foods belong at the center of a healthy diet,” said International Dairy Foods Association president and CEO Michael Dykes, praising the decision as an “important victory for consumer choice and public health.” Gregg Doud, President and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation, echoed that sense of relief in his own statement. What does that mean for dairy milk and milk-based RTDs? Unlock the full story with BevNET & Nosh Insider |
