| | 📰 First Up In Food | | | | The anti-seed-oil movement was on full display at the third edition of Newtopia Now in Denver this week. Brands presenting at the show were highlighting recipe reformulations and platforming around trendy fats like beef tallow and avocado oil. Brands like Cactus Foods have decided to pivot into avocado oil after receiving feedback from its consumers that seed-oils were not preferred. New condiment maker El Horno Chimi also decided to use avocado oil when it launched its chili crisp chimichurri line earlier this year. Founded by former firefighter Frank Park, El Horno was developed in the firehouse where meals are often places for firefighters to unpack the stresses of their jobs. A portion of profits for the brand will support mental health and chaplain training for Los Angeles firefighters.
Turning to tallow. Brands at Newtopia were also advocating for the health benefits of rendered beef fat, or tallow. Potato chip brand TIPS Chips uses unbleached, domestically-sourced tallow for its snacks. The Huntington Beach-based brand said it has seen demand grow dramatically in the last year as consumers become more educated about tallow. Pre-launch brand Lil’ Melts was presenting its cooking solution, a 30-piece container of 1 inch cubes. The pre-portioned cubes require special equipment to manufacture so the brand was driving interest in the product among retailers and investors so it can raise capital to partner with a co-manufacturer.
