| | 📰 First Up In Food | | | | For years, hummus brands have competed over what goes in the tub. Prest founder Brian Youngblood is asking a more fundamental question: Why do you need the tub? Think: A powdered, sesame-free format that can be prepared by mixing with water and olive oil. The Pantry Play: Prest’s pouch format is designed to address some of the pain points of its conventional refrigerated counterpart with a shelf life of up to two years. Additionally, consumers can prepare as much or as little (read: several tablespoons worth) as desired at a time – helping to eliminate food waste. Beyond the Trail: While powdered hummus isn’t a new concept, it’s largely been marketed toward hikers and backpacking enthusiasts. Brands in the set include Hiker’s Hummus and Mother Earth Products. The format was also popular at natural food co-ops in the 1970s and 1980s, according to Prest founder Brian Youngblood. Early purchasers of his brand have skewed toward women over the age of 55 who he believes may remember powdered hummus from that time.
What They Said: “It’s been tried, but it hasn’t succeeded in normal grocery for the everyday consumer. But I don’t think that’s because it’s not solving a problem for people… no one’s created a brand that’s resonated with people.” – Brian Youngblood, founder The Bigger Question: Now that Prest has subtracted the cold chain from the hummus equation, can it convince consumers to look for the dip outside of the refrigerated set?
