The pitch decks of CPG brands these days must all sound a little something like this: “The People Will Crave Protein In Perpetuity.”

But as the quality and ingredients contributing to protein claims increasingly come under scrutiny (per Mintel, clean label, functional and convenient proteins are leading the list of consumer demands), new innovations have led to an interesting dichotomy among new protein fueled innovations. 

On one hand you have entirely novel brands like David, who essentially said “we don’t care about clean label, just trust the front-of-pack macros.” On the other, you have David’s co-founder and CEO Peter Rahal’s OG product (read: RXBAR) making a sizable move this week, expanding beyond its hero format with Protein Energy Bites.
